RAN 2019 RWC QUALIFICATION TOURNAMENT
BARBADOS MEN IN 2019 RWC QUALIFIERS
The Rugby Barbados Senior Men’s team will take on Guyana (April 23rd in Guyana), Trinidad and Tobago (May 21st in Barbados) and Jamaica (June 18th in Jamaica) in their quest to qualify for the finals of the Rugby Americas North (RAN) Rugby World Cup 2019 Qualification tournament.
The region once again had the honour of staging the first match of the 2019 RWC Qualification tournament when Jamaica and St Vincent and the Grenadines played a one-off Group Qualification match at Arnos Vale cricket ground on March 5th. The Webb Ellis Trophy was on hand as, true to tradition, the referee of the previous RWC Final, Nigel Owens, took charge in the middle. While it was a far cry from the New Zealand versus Australia final, the opening match of the RWC 2019 qualification process demonstrates the widespread appeal of the game of Rugby. Jamaica ran out the winners of that match, and will now enter the South Zone where they will face Barbados, Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago.
The Barbadian boys will be hoping to repeat the success of their 2005 counterparts who went on to win the regional tournament and face Canada and the USA in a play-off for a spot in the finals of the 2008 RWC. The road to the finals would be a lot longer for this group of players, but nothing was ever achieved by aiming low!
